Approximately 12% of all cats in the United States have been exposed to feline AIDS (FIV). Unlike aid in humans, most cats with FIV can live many years without health problems. Finally, secondary conditions, such as viral infections, diabetes or kidney disease can affect a cat with AIDS and the immune system attack. Cats infected with FIV that develops a secondary condition may not be able to fight their disease, so IVF can be leading cause of death.

There is some debate about the feline form of AIDS is transmitted from one cat to another. Most veterinarians agree that it is passed through blood, as cat bites or that can be transmitted from a pregnant woman to her offspring during gestation (pregnancy). Some veterinarians believe IVF is also contracted through mutual grooming.

In 2002 Fort Dodge Animal Health released a vaccine designed to prevent acquiring a healthy cat feline AIDS. The drug is controversial for several reasons.

1. There are at least five known strains of FIV. The drug does not protect against all strains. The guardians of cats can be assured that is not protected pet, but in fact, the carrier is protected from certain strains of the disease.

2. Once a cat vaccinated for FIV, always be positive for IVF. This means that a vet can not tell the difference between a healthy cat vaccinated for FIV and a cat infected with FIV. If your cat healthy vaccinated to protect against FIV, and then infected with FIV and become ill, it is impossible for a veterinarian to determine if your cat is infected with another strain of the disease. This makes treatment difficult.

3. The FIV vaccine is an "adjunctive" medicine. One of the common side effects of "adjuvant" Medicine is the growth of tumors.

4. Finally, the vaccine against FIV has a success rate of 82%. This means that one in five cats exposed to IVF is infected, even whether they were vaccinated with the drug.

Here are some things you may want to consider. If you have an indoor cat and not exposed to other cats, can get viral diseases such as leukemia, but can not catch feline AIDS. There is no need to vaccinate an indoor cat against FIV. If you have a cat that spends time outdoors make sure it is spayed or neutered before sexual maturity (approximately six months). This is the first line of defense. Your cat is much less likely to participate in a cat fight. This greatly reduces the possibility of a bite, or blood-related injury with an infected cat. If you decide to vaccinate your cat outdoors make sure you also have a microchip and a collar that identifies him as the owner.

If your cat never took it as a stray dog, and housing could not easily find the owner or guardian, your cat euthanasia would quickly as a positive outcome for IVF. If your cat FIV contracts, this does not mean mandatory death sentence. Most indoor cats with FIV can live a long and reasonably healthy. Finally, it is assured there are no known cases of AIDS Feline make humans or dogs.
