Pain in the Neck: Head Restraints Flunk Tests
Head restraints in dozens of sport utility vehicles, pickups and minivans provided only poor or marginal protection against neck injuries in crashes simulated by the extent of the impact of the insurance industry.
The Insurance Institute for Security results of a test drive, released Tuesday, found SUV has improved protection against neck injuries. Institute ratings of good, acceptable, marginal or poor in 87 models of 2007 are based on geometric measurements of head restraints and simulated crashes that together assess how dots of different sizes would be protected in rear-end collision custom.
Among the best performers performers are head restraint combinations in SUVs made by Subaru and Volvo and new product lines Acura, Ford, Honda and Hyundai. SUVs were misclassified in the BMW X3 and X5, Buick Rainier, Chevrolet TrailBlazer, GMC Envoy and Isuzu Ascender; Cadillac SRX, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Nitro, Ford Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer, Mitsubishi Endeavor, Hummer H3, Hyundai Tucson, Jeep Liberty, Kia Sportage, Lexus GX470 and RX; Nissan Xterra, Saab 9-7X, Suzuki XL7, Toyota 4Runner and Highlander.
Just pick, the Toyota Tundra, 2007, received the highest rating of good in crash tests by the rear. For pickups, the institute gave poor ratings to Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Classic GMC Sierra 1500 Classic, Dodge Ram 1500, Ford Ranger and Mazda B Series, Nissan Frontier and certain versions of Ford F-150, Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider.
Meanwhile, minivans have been rated the Buick Terraza bad, Chevrolet Uplander, Saturn Relay, some versions of the Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Caravan and Toyota Sienna.
