What is more dangerous - second hand car exhaust or second hand cigarette smoke?
I ask this only because I know that I can survive one hell of a lot longer in a garage full of cigarette smoke than one full of car exhaust.
So... long term exposures... what is worse?
Car exhaust is much more concentrated than cigarette smoke. It contains carbon monoxide, a poison, as well as partially burned hydrocarbons, other additives that have gone through the car engine that are dangerous, but no longer lead. One factor in a garage with a car running is that the car uses up the oxygen.
Cigarette smoke does contain carbon monoxide, but not as concentrated. Look what is burning compared to the gasoline of a car. It does also contain other poisons such as arsenic, cyanide, formaldehyde,benzene, acetylene, lead,ammonia, methanol, and about 4000 other chemicals. Tars and nicotine stay with the smoker, but nitric oxide, acetone, toluene, cadmium, selenium, chromium, mercury and many more things with much longer names.
