DaimlerChrysler AG has recently opened a new assembly plant located in Ladson, South Carolina. During the opening ceremony in the new assembly plant, Wilfried Porth, Head of the Mercedes-Benz Vans business unit of DaimlerChrysler AG, said:

As part of a test fleet program for Chrysler Group, Auburn Hills Car based roll out about 20 units of Dodge Sprinter plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the U.S.. According to Chrysler Group, the PHEV Dodge Sprinter can achieve maximum autonomy to run 20 miles solely on electricity. The electricity comes from a Lithium-ion which offers more storage capacity compared to nickel-metal hydride (NiMH). The Dodge Sprinter PHEV has a switch on the dashboard that allows the driver manually or automatically switch between two modes of driving.
